This is a starting checklist, informed by WorkSafe’s farm guidance. It is not a complete risk assessment or a guarantee of compliance. WorkSafe emphasises that businesses working together need to coordinate their health and safety arrangements.
1. Arrival and access
- Where should visitors stop, report and park?
- Who is their host, and how should they contact that person?
- Which routes and areas may they use? Which are restricted?
2. Current risks and controls
- Explain relevant livestock, vehicle and machinery activity.
- Identify any work areas, terrain, waterways, structures or substances visitors need to avoid.
- Describe the practical controls they must follow, including required protective equipment.
- Update the briefing when the work or conditions change.
3. Emergency arrangements
- Explain how to raise the alarm and contact the host.
- Identify the meeting point and relevant first aid arrangements.
- Provide the location information needed by emergency services.
- Explain how visitors will be accounted for, including people who did not use the digital register.
4. Contractors and the task
Discuss the work with the contractor, exchange information about risks and agree who will manage them. A visitor briefing can introduce the farm’s arrangements; the task may need a separate discussion, induction, competence checks or supervision.
5. Check understanding and departure
- Give visitors a way to ask questions before entering.
- Arrange supervision where needed rather than relying on a checkbox.
- Explain how to sign out and report incidents or changed conditions.
